The Chainsmokers Speak on Avicci’s Legacy at the Billboard Music Awards

At Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards, the Chainsmokers and Halsey honored recently departed Avicci, a Swedish DJ and producer who died on April 20th.

 

During their presentation of the Top Hot 100 Song of 2018 to Luis Fonsi, the artist behind the hit “Despacito”, Alex Pall and Drew Taggart, the duo behind the Chainsmokers, told the crowd of thousands at the Las Vegas Grand Garden Arena as well as everyone watching on TV that Avicci “inspired so many in so many ways” and meant so much to them and the rest of the EDM community. Halsey, who was presenting the award with the duo, who she recently released a song with, also added that everyone agreed Avicci had been a joy to work with and that his death was a reminder to support everyone struggling with mental illness.

 

Pall and Taggart also spoke about Avicci when they were receiving the award for Top Dance/Electronic Act, dedicating the award to Avicci, saying that he inspired them to work towards music and that he would be missed.

The Chainsmokers are an EDM/pop music duo, who have recently been named the number one dance artist on Billboard’s Dance 100, have been in the eye of mainstream music since the release of their 2014 single “#Selfie”. Their 2016 duet with Halsey, “Closer”, became their first Billboard Number 1 single, following up their top 5 single “Don’t Let Me Down” with Daya and top 10 single “Roses”. In addition to being named the number one dance artist on Billboard’s Dance 100, they have been awarded the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording for “Don’t Let Me Down” at the 59th Grammys and won five iHeart Radio Music Awards and two American Music Awards. More recently, they have released several songs off their upcoming album, “Sick Boy”, “You Owe Me”, and “Everybody Hates Me”. Together, these three songs make up the Sick Boy EP, which will be one-third of their upcoming sophomore studio effort, Somebody. They enjoy pushing the boundaries of different musical styles in their music.
